Q. Where do you live?
A. I live in Portland, Oregon.
Q. What kind of experience do you have?
A. I have a broad scope of experience as a professional designer. I started out making signs in college and working for a small ad agency. After I moved to Oregon I took a job painting windsurf and surf boards in The Columbia River Gorge and I did graphic design for the windsurfing and then snowboarding industries. I also was involved in the research, development, design and manufacturing of new products for those markets. When I decided it was time to “grow up” I moved to Portland with online retailer Egghead Software, which was bought by Surplus Direct which was bought by OnSale which was when I decided to get out of e-commerce for a while. But I took a job with Wieden & Kennedy briefly and did just that… more e-commerce stuff except for bigger brands. After that I taught design at Portland Community College and began freelancing. These days I freelance for clients in Portland and around the world.
Q. How do people work with you and how do I begin the process?
A. First tell me as much about your project as you can. If you don’t have a RFP or project scope just email me some notes. Let me take a look and I will get in touch as soon as possible with my thoughts and recommendations and we can go from there.
Q. Do you just freelance or would you work full-time?
A. I would entertain working full-time with the right people. One of the things that has kept me freelancing is that I am a musician and I am occasionally called upon to go places to play music- like a week a year attending SXSW in Austin or the possibility of a week or two in Europe. I take my laptop wherever I go but… it’s not the perfect situation for some full-time situations. I enjoy collaborating a lot though and sometimes miss the day to day interaction with comrades. I do work in-house when clients want that.
Q. Do you have a complete resume available?
A. Yes I do. Just ask and I can put you in touch.
Q. How about references?
A. Yes. Any and all clients represented on my website are available for comment. Just ask and I will put you in touch.
Q. Are you expensive?
A. Most of my clients think I am a great bargain, which is why they keep coming back. I might be more expensive than your brother-in-law or the kid next door that “makes web pages and logos” but I do the work right the first time with real-world commercial experience and it will be something you will be proud of showing.
Q. Dogs or Cats?
A. They are both great but I prefer cats.
Q. Can I talk to you in person?
A. Sure. Drop me a note and let me know what you want to talk about and I will give you my number.
